Setting curriculum standards (Ensuring our students are prepared for the global workforce upon graduation.)
Reviewing and adopting instructional materials (Providing rigorous and relevant curriculum for all students. Also ensuring we address the learning gaps caused by COVID. Many students fell behind, yet we promoted them and they lack the foundational skills from previous grade levels to be successful in their current grade.)
Establishing graduation requirements (Advocating to remove STAAR EOC tests as a graduation requirement. When students are promoted to the next grade level in 5th and 8th grades, even when they haven't been successful on STAAR, we are penalizing the student by expecting them to pass to graduate.)
Overseeing the Texas Permanent School Fund
Appointing board members to military reservation and special school districts
Providing final review of rules proposed by the State Board for Educator Certification
Reviewing the commissioner's proposed award of new charter schools with authority to veto a recommended applicant
Why does SBOE matter
There are 15 districts in Texas and each district represents approximately 1.6 million constituents.
SBOE controls everything that is learned in Texas Public Schools.
What happens in Texas, doesn't always stay in Texas. As one of the largest markets for textbooks, many other states and school districts will adopt whatever Texas adopts for curriculum.
